Harvest Hope Food Bank Kicks Off - June thru September

The Harvest Hope Food Bank unveils the EXTRA Mile Campaign, a summer hunger
relief effort, at a press conference to be held Wednesday May 28 at 2:30 p.m. in front of
the main entrance of the food bank at 2220 Shop Road. The campaign will be from June
1 through September 30, 2008 .
Denise R. Holland, Executive Director of the Harvest Hope Food Bank will outline a
comprehensive plan for businesses and the community at large to go the extra mile to
help feed the hungry during the summer. The first corporate sponsorship to help in this
summer hunger relief campaign will be donated during the press conference.
The EXTRA Mile Campaign was conceived because summer months are usually the
most difficult for families in need. Those who depend on free or subsidized school meals
for their children now must provide three meals a day during summer vacation. With the
economy in decline and the price of food and gasoline increasing, many more people
cannot buy food or even travel to an emergency food pantry.
South Carolina has the second largest popu lation of hungry people in the country and
those in need face worsening conditions this summer and are at a greater risk of hunger.
The Harvest Hope Food Bank anticipates an unprecedented increase in service and needs
the help of the community to meet this need.
The EXTRA Mile Campaign partners with the business community, faith leaders and
individuals within the 20-county area served by the Harvest Hope Food Bank For more
